Book Cover Design

Your cover is the first sentence readers actually read.

  • 2-3 genuinely different concepts to choose from
  • Print, spine & e-book files at every required size
  • Revision rounds until it’s right

Before anyone opens your book, they see the cover: as a thumbnail on Amazon, a tile in a Kindle store, or a spine on a shelf. In that first glance, a reader decides, almost subconsciously, whether this book is “for them.” A cover that looks amateur or out of step with its genre gets scrolled past no matter how good the writing inside is.

What’s included

  • A genre and market conversation first: a memoir cover, a thriller cover, and a business book cover succeed by completely different rules.
  • Custom concept design using original illustration, photography, or typography-led design. Never a stock template with your title swapped in.
  • Full-package files: front cover, spine, and back cover, sized correctly for print and separately for e-book thumbnails.
  • Revision rounds, so the cover evolves based on your actual reaction, not just our first instinct.

Why it matters

Your cover is catching attention, setting accurate expectations for what’s inside, and building trust that the rest of the book was made with the same professionalism. For authors 50 and older writing memoir, family history, business, or fiction, we’ve found readers in your own age range respond especially well to covers that feel considered and true to the material, rather than trendy for trendiness’s sake.

Our process

  • A short design brief conversation: genre, tone, comparable titles you admire.
  • Two to three initial concepts, each a genuinely different direction.
  • Your feedback incorporated through as many rounds as it takes to get it right.
  • Full file delivery: print-ready PDF with correct spine width and bleed, plus e-book files.
  • A final check against your publishing platform’s cover specifications.

What is included

Two or three real concepts

Genuinely different directions, not one idea in three colourways, so the choice in front of you is an actual choice.

A full print wrap

Front, spine and back as a single file, with the spine width calculated from your final page count and paper stock so the artwork lands where it should.

E-book and thumbnail versions

Sized for every retailer, and checked at the size a reader actually first sees it, about the width of a thumbnail on a phone.

The working files

Layered source files and fonts, yours to keep. If you ever work with another designer, they can pick up where this left off.

How this one runs

  1. A brief. Your book, your readers, and the shelf it belongs on. We will ask for covers you admire and covers you cannot stand. The second list is usually more useful.
  2. Concepts. Two or three directions, presented as the reader would meet them: full size, thumbnail, and on a mock spine among other books.
  3. Refinement. You pick a direction and we take it the rest of the way. Revision rounds are included until it is right, not capped at two and then billed.
  4. Production files. Every size and format each retailer and printer requires, generated from the final artwork and named so you can tell them apart.

About book cover design

What if I don’t like any of the concepts?

Then the brief was wrong and we go back to it, at no extra cost. That is rare, because the brief stage is built to prevent it, but a cover you are lukewarm about is a failure whichever way it happened.

Can you use my own photograph or artwork?

Often yes. Family photographs for memoirs are common. It needs to be high enough resolution for print and you need the right to use it, which we will check before it goes anywhere near the cover.

Why does the spine width matter so much?

The spine is calculated from your page count and the exact paper stock. Change either after the cover is built and the artwork shifts: the title creeps around onto the front, or the back text wanders onto the spine. This is why the interior is normally finished before the wrap is generated.

Do I own the design?

Yes, outright, including the layered source files. There is no licence to renew and no permission to ask if you want to put the cover on a poster, a website or a postcard.
