Printing & Fulfillment

Holding your printed book in your hands is a different feeling entirely than seeing it on a screen.

  • Print-on-demand or short-run & offset printing
  • A physical proof approved before any full run
  • Honest guidance on quantity, never an oversell

Digital publishing made books more accessible than ever, but print still matters: for author copies, local bookstore consignment, speaking events, and the simple pleasure of a well-made physical object. The right choice depends heavily on how many copies you need and how you’ll distribute them.

What’s included

  • Print-on-demand setup: copies printed individually as they’re ordered, with no inventory to hold or store.
  • Short-run and offset printing for a launch event, consignment, or direct sales, with the per-copy cost coming down at volume.
  • Material and finish choices explained plainly: paperback or hardcover, matte or gloss, binding type.
  • A physical proof before any full run, so you can review print quality before committing.
  • Fulfillment support, shipping copies to you, to an event, or to customers directly.

Why it matters

A poorly printed book undercuts everything else you’ve invested in, and it’s the one part of the process a reader physically holds. Ordering far more copies than you can realistically sell ties up money and storage space unnecessarily. We’d rather help you order exactly what you need.

Our process

  • A short conversation about how you’ll use printed copies.
  • Format and material recommendations matched to your genre and budget.
  • A sample proof, reviewed and approved by you.
  • Production and a quality check on the full order.
  • Delivery, shipped to you, an event, or fulfilled to individual orders.

What is included

A printed proof

A real copy of your actual book, in your hands, before any quantity is run. Screens misrepresent paper, and a proof is the only honest check.

Stock and binding guidance

Cream or white paper, matte or gloss lamination, perfect bound or case bound, explained in terms of how your book will feel and what it costs.

A print run to your quantity

Print-on-demand for an open-ended trickle, or a short run or offset run where the economics genuinely favour it.

Delivery you can plan around

Copies shipped where you need them, with a schedule you can hold an event against.

How this one runs

  1. A real quantity conversation. What the copies are actually for: events, a launch, review copies, ongoing retail. This decides the printing method, and it is worth ten minutes on the phone.
  2. Specification and quote. Stock, binding, finish and quantity priced properly, with the per-copy cost at a couple of quantities so you can see where the curve bends.
  3. Proof approval. A physical proof, checked and signed off by you. Nothing runs until you have held one.
  4. Print and ship. The run is produced and delivered, with tracking and a date you can plan an event around.

About printing & fulfillment

How many copies should I order?

Usually fewer than instinct suggests. Garages across the country hold boxes of unsold first runs ordered because the per-copy price looked better at a thousand. Unless you have events or a buyer lined up, print-on-demand plus a modest run for your own use is the lower-risk start, and we will say so even though it is the smaller order.

Is print-on-demand lower quality?

Not any more, for most books. Modern digital printing is very close to offset for standard text interiors. Where offset still clearly wins is heavy colour, unusual stock and special finishes, and at quantity, on price.

Can I sell the copies myself?

Yes, and you keep everything you charge. Author copies bought at print cost and sold at events or direct to readers are usually the most profitable sales an independent author makes.

What if the printed copies look wrong?

That is what the proof stage is for, and it is why we do not skip it however tight the schedule. If a full run comes back not matching the approved proof, that is the printer’s error to correct and we handle it with them rather than handing you a phone number.
