Book Formatting & Typesetting

The difference between a manuscript and a book is often twenty pages of formatting no one notices, until it’s missing.

  • Print interior design at your exact trim size
  • Clean, reflowable EPUB & Kindle files
  • A sample chapter approved before we format the rest

Readers can’t always explain why one book feels professionally made and another feels homemade, but they can feel it within the first few pages. Cramped margins, inconsistent chapter headers and an e-book where paragraphs run together all quietly tell a reader the book might not be worth their time. Formatting is where your finished manuscript becomes an actual book.

What’s included

We format for two distinct destinations, because print and digital genuinely require different approaches.

  • Print interior design: trim size, margins that account for the binding gutter, running headers, chapter openers, and properly built front and back matter.
  • E-book formatting: clean, reflowable EPUB and Kindle files with a working table of contents, tested on real devices, not just a preview window.
  • Typefaces chosen for comfortable extended reading. This matters more for a 50-and-over reader’s eyes than most authors think to ask about.

Why it matters

Distribution platforms can reject or flag poorly formatted files, delaying your launch. Beyond that, a reader distracted by clunky typography is less likely to finish the book, let alone leave the review that helps future readers find it.

Our process

  • We review your manuscript and recommend a trim size and interior style that fits your genre.
  • We build a sample chapter first, so you approve the look before we format all 300 pages.
  • We format the full interior, keeping headers, spacing, and structure consistent throughout.
  • We test the files: print proofs and e-book files checked on real devices.
  • We deliver print-ready PDFs and e-book files, with a short guide to what each one is for.

What is included

A print-ready interior

A press-quality PDF built at your exact trim size, with the binding gutter, bleed and margins your printer specifies rather than a generic template.

EPUB and Kindle files

Reflowable, properly coded, with a working navigable table of contents. These are the files retailers accept without a validation warning.

Designed chapter openers

Consistent chapter pages, running heads, folios and section breaks, set in a typeface chosen for long reading rather than for the cover.

Complete front and back matter

Title page, copyright page, dedication, acknowledgements and about-the-author, built in the order the trade expects them.

How this one runs

  1. A specification. Trim size, paper stock, binding and the retailers you are going to. These decide the interior, so they are settled before any type is set.
  2. A sample chapter. One chapter formatted completely, in print and digital, for you to approve. Nothing else is touched until you are happy with it.
  3. The full interior. The approved treatment applied through the whole book, with the front and back matter built and the pagination checked.
  4. Device testing. The e-book opened on real hardware and the print PDF run through the printer’s preflight, before the files reach you rather than after a rejection.

About book formatting & typesetting

Why can’t I just upload my Word document?

You can, and a great many books are published that way, and it is usually visible. Word exports carry the manuscript’s formatting rather than a book’s: no gutter allowance, running heads that repeat the wrong chapter, and an e-book whose paragraph indents come through as stray spaces. A reader rarely names the problem, but they register it in the first few pages.

What trim size should I choose?

It depends on genre and page count more than taste. A 90,000-word novel at 5×8 inches becomes a brick; at 5.5×8.5 it sits comfortably in the hand and costs less to print. We will tell you what your book and your page count point to, and why, before anything is set.

Will you format a book you did not edit?

Yes, and it is common. We will flag anything we notice while working through the text (inconsistent chapter titles, a missing copyright page), but formatting is not a proofread and we will not pretend it catches what one would.

What if the printer rejects my file?

We fix it, at no charge. Preflighting against the printer’s own specification before delivery is the point of the testing stage, so a rejection means we missed something rather than that you bought the wrong service.
